Let's not kid ourselves, we're all guilty of hoarding clothes that either don't suit or fit us, and beauty products which are well beyond their best and will probably never touch your fingertips again. However that nagging "maybe" that's telling you quite the opposite is cluttering up not only our wardrobe and drawers, but minds too!
There's a lot to be said for the benefits of having a good old clear out, but why not adapt the same mentality we can apply to gutting our our wardrobes to our skincare and makeup drawer too.
I think as we get older, we start to become more content in ourselves, and perhaps a little complacent too. Whilst complacency isn't great, contentment is, and although I completely admire any 40+ year old rocking a winged yellow eyeliner and burnt red smokey eye, that look just aint for me.
Throw back to my early 20's when I was working in London as a stylist, I very quickly became content in my style, and whilst it's not for everyone, I know what I feel comfortable in and generally which cuts suit my body shape, and therefore my wardrobe is pretty minimal and full of items I actually wear. Those that are for a special occasion, sit to one side, so it doesn't clutter the items which I do wear. Take this same rule and apply it to your skin and makeup routines and getting ready in the morning and pampering yourself in the evening will be super quick and seamless, as wading through that pile of products you're never going to wear, will be no more.
I'm all over rocking a red lip and nails on a Saturday night, but generally my day to day make up is the same, so therefore my make up drawer doesn't call for eye shadow palette after eye shadow palette and 20 variations of red lipstick. Instead it's a combination of smokey browns, a good mascara and lip balm and a little pop of Stilla glitter if my eyes need a pop to wake them up! As for my skin it know's what it likes, and I know which products suit my lifestyle, generally those that require very little effort when it comes to applying.
For me, this has to be one of the most important steps. I work pretty much 7 days a week, which means I'm wearing a full face of makeup for up to 16 hours a day. For a deep cleanse I turn to Omorovicza's Thermal Cleansing Balm, it removes any make up, and will remove every last bit of mascara. It comes with a cloth, and the idea is to massage it into your skin and use the hot cloth method to remove it. If I'm being a little lazy, I'll apply the balm and remove with cotton wool pads and warm water, but either way it gives and incredible deep cleanse and leaves your skin feeling super smooth.
It might sound like a bit of a faff, but I always follow this with Omorovicza's foam Cleanser, which was introduced to me through Lydia Millen's Cult Beauty Box. Since using it twice a day, every day, I'm already on my second tube! With any good product, generally a little will go a long way. This foam cleanser is super quick to use and can be used on its own and rinsed off with warm water. It leaves your skin feeling super clean and is perfect for oily skin.
Another Cult Beauty product introduced by Lydia's uh-mazing beauty box, this is a bit of a newly for me. By description is a "powerful overnight serum" which looks and feels and looks more like a toner. It's a clear liquid which you apply onto a cotton wool pad and sweep over your skin, avoiding eyes and lips. I use this 2-3 times a week as it's essentially a sleep in liquid skin peel. IT's pack with glycolic acid and potassium hydroxide, helping to lessen the visibility of fine lines, blemishes and pores.
This stuff is pretty powerful, and I'll often follow it with a night time oil or hydrating mask, to to help dilute the liquid a little.
A product introduced into my refined skincare regime thanks to the ageing process we all try to gracefully tiptoe through. This is a 30 day treatment comes with a small bottle of the serum and 30 applicators for single use. Applying a couple of drops to an applicator and using before bed on a daily basis, I sweep this over the base of my lashes and through my un-plucked brows.
This serum helps to thicken lashes and brows through a safe and natural formula which helps to restore health and vitality, encouraging hair matrix production. It takes seconds to apply and gets to work whilst you sleep.
When it comes to moisturiser, I haven't quite taken the step to differentiate between day time and evening moisturisers, however I do stock up on a few moisturisers and use according to how my skin's feeling. I have oily/ combination skin which means some days my skin calls for something light and quick absorbing and other days, calls for something that's a little more nourishing.
My currently go-to treatments in the evening are Herbivore's Pink Cloud moisturiser, and Pineapple & Gemstone Brighten Mask and Sunday Riley's Luna Sleeping Night Oil. Which I either apply on their own, or after applying Alpha H's Liquid gold, again depending on how my skin if feeling.
If my skin needs a little more tlc and I'm feeling super lazy, I'll apply Herbivore's Brighten mask as it requires little effort to sink in, or if I'm in the mood for a mini facial, Sunday Riley's night oil which takes a little longer to sink into the skin is applied gently with my finger tips and then massaged in using my jade or rose quartz roller.
For evenings when my skin's feeling a little more oily, Herbivore's Pink Cloud moisturiser, which I mostly use in the morning, is perfect for a little moisture boost! Whilst all three noted above have quickly become social media cult products, they genuinely work wonders and are the only three moisturising products I need to turn to come the evening.
All three leave your skin super moisturised and I wake up with glowy, clear skin most mornings, even if I'm waking up on little sleep! Whilst you apply Herbivore's brightening mask for 10 - 15 minutes, I'm sure lazy and pat it on just before I go to bed and sleep with it on. It's super light and as long as you moisturise well in the morning, it won't leave your skin feeling oily and clogged up.
